Eat Local!

No two ways about it! If you can buy locally from your local farmer's market or co-op you will be #1: keeping your hard earned money in the community, and #2 have a better chance at purchasing non-GMO grown fruits and vegetables. So, it's a win-win situation. Be sure and ask if the farmer uses GMO pesticides prior to purchasing however, as just because it's grown local doesn't always mean organic! Purchase from organic farmers when possible. If you can't, wash, wash, wash!

With the growing season upon us, even here in the Appalachians, we are out at the farmer stands twice weekly here. And you can't beat that great smell of a harvest fresh from the ground! I love going! We have one local here in town on Thursdays, and one in Lewisburg on Wednesday's. So we try to hit them both. Great buys. Although not always as inexpensive as super market chains, the produce is fresh and it's beautiful! These farmers bring in their best! And those that bring it ALL in offer discounts on bruised or not so perfect buys, which are great if you're going to freeze, can, or use up right away!

Right now Better Homes and Gardens has a great slide show with 50 recipes on using the best of summers famer market purchases for healthy and tasty recipes! You can find that here

So take advantage of summer and the tasty treats right at your farmers market! You'll be surprised at the variety of good food available!
